چکیده

We report the results of X–ray (2–10 keV) observations of the giant molecular clouds Sgr B, Sgr C and Sgr D in the Galactic Center region, together with the discovery of the point-like source SAX J1748.2–2808. The data have been obtained with the MECS instrument on the BeppoSAX satellite. The core of Sgr B2 has an X–ray luminosity of ∼6×10 erg s and its spectrum is characterized by a strong Fe emission line at ∼6.5 keV with an equivalent width of 2 keV. Faint diffuse X–ray emission is detected from Sgr C and from the SNR G1.05–0.15 (Sgr D). A new, unresolved source with a strong Fe line has been discovered in the Sgr D region. This source, SAX J1748.2–2808, is probably associated with a SiO and OH maser source at the Galactic Center distance. If so, its luminosity is 10 erg s. We propose that the X–ray emission from SAX J1748.2–2808 is produced either by protostars or by a giant molecular cloud core. Emission from sources similar to SAX J1748.2–2808 could have an impact on the expected contribution on the observed Fe line emission from the Galactic ridge.

Characteristics of Diffuse X-ray Line Emission within 20 Pc of the Galactic Center

Over the last three years, the Galactic center region has been monitored with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Besides the X-ray emission from the target object, Sgr A*, diffuse X-ray emission was detected throughout most of the 17 × 17 field of view. With 11 Chandra observations through 2002 June, the total effective exposure reaches ∼590 ks, providing significant photon statistics on much of th...

Equivalent width, shape and proper motion of the iron fluorescent line emission from the molecular clouds as an indicator of the illuminating source X-ray flux history

Observations of the diffuse emission in the 8–22 keV energy range, elongated parallel to the Galactic plane (Sunyaev et al. 1993) and detection of the strong 6.4 keV fluorescent line with ∼ 1 keV equivalent width from some giant molecular clouds (e.g. Sgr B2) in the Galactic Centre region (Koyama 1994) suggest that the neutral matter of these clouds is (or was) illuminated by powerful X-ray rad...

Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center and Nearby Edge-on Galaxies

I review our recent Chandra surveys of the center region of the Milky Way and other nearby edge-on galaxies. Our Galactic center survey, consisting of 30 overlapping pointings, provides an unprecedented high-resolution, broadband X-ray view of a 0.8x2 square degree swath along the Galactic plane. This X-ray panorama allows a separation of the discrete source and diffuse X-ray components. Our pr...

The di use X - ray emission from the Galactic center with Simbol - X

Similarly to the larger Galactic ridge, the Galactic center region presents a hard diffuse emission whose origin has been strongly debated for the past two decades: does this emission result from the contribution of numerous, yet unresolved, discrete point sources ? Or does it originate in a truly diffuse, hot plasma ? The Galactic center region (GC) is however different on many respects from t...

The Origin of X-ray Emission from a Galactic Center Molecular Cloud: Low Energy Cosmic Ray Electrons

The Galactic center region near l≈ 0.2 hosts a mixture of nonthermal linear filaments and thermal radio continuum features associated with the radio Arc. Chandra observations of this region reveal an X-ray filament and diffuse emission with an extent of roughly 60′′ × 2′′ and 5′ × 3′, respectively. The X-ray filament lies at the edge of the nonthermal radio filaments and a dense molecular shell...
